Vintage Shriners Lulu Atlantic City 1904 "J. H. Merrill" Thos Maddock Sons Co. Ceramic 4 3/4 Inch MugYou are bidding on a Vintage Shriners Lulu Atlantic City 1904 "J. H. Merrill" Thos Maddock Sons Co. Ceramic 4 3/4 Inch Mug .
This great looking cranberry and white mug (coffee or beer) would allow you to show your support for the Shriners. The mug is in excellent shape for being over 100 years old. There is just some light scratching in the cranberry coloring. The ceramic (porcelain maybe) is without blemishes.
From my research, this mug commemorates the Lulu Shrine Temple and their annual pilgrimage to the Imperial Session held In Atlantic City, NJ, in 1904.
From the LuLu Shriners website- "LuLu Shrine is the 16th of 195 international Shriners temples. Originally, The Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, also commonly known as Shriners and abbreviated A.A.O.N.M.S., established in 1870, is an appendant body to Freemasonry, based in the United States. In 2010, the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, as well as Shriners North America, changed its name to Shriners International, now covering nearly 200 temples (chapters) across North America, South America, Europe and Southeast Asia. The organization is best known for the Shriners Hospitals for Children it administers and the red fezzes that members wear. The organization is headquartered in Tampa, Florida.[2] Shriners International describes itself as a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. There are approximately 340,000 members from 195 temples (chapters) in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Republic of Panama, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Europe and Australia. On July 6, 2011, Shriners International commissioned Emirat Shriners of Heidelberg, Germany, as its 194th temple, and formed a new temple in Mindanao, Philippines (#195) in 2012."
The mug has 3 sections- one is an image of a building that reads "LuLu Temple" on the façade, one (opposite side of the handle) reads "LuLu Atlantic City 1904" with the Shriners emblem logo image, and the last is a larger image of an ornate building with "J. H. Merrill" (the Shriner/owner of the mug perhaps) in gold lettering.
As found on the Shriners web-site "The emblem (features), the crescent and scimitar, is an important part of the fraternity’s theme, and is representative of the characteristics embodied by the Shriners. The scimitar stands for the backbone of the fraternity, its members. The two claws are for the Shriners fraternity and its philanthropy. The sphinx stands for the governing body of the Shriners. The five-pointed star represents the thousands of children helped by the philanthropy each year. The emblem also bears the phrase “Robur et Furor,” which means “Strength and Fury.”
On the bottom of the mug it reads "Thos Maddock Sons Co, Trenton N.J."
This measures approximately 4 3/4 inches tall, has a 2 3/4 inch diameter opening and has a 3 7/8 diameter base (which "flares" out slightly). The handle is about 3 inches. This has some mass to it, weighing about a pound.
Please note there is a slight glare on the photos- these were taken without a flash but the mug is glazed on the surface.
