If you are looking for an exceptional investment, here is what is described in publications as a late-War prototype, i.e. an officer's gunto made with reduced resources in the late war period.
Construction: Lacquer on wood scabbard with brass fittings (some losses), hilt of canvas covered by Japanese urushi lacquer
I recognize the blade as Hizen, not sure which smith, got at recent militaria show in a trade. Probably Hizen Kanemoto.
High quality blade:
Blade is traditional construction, using tamahagane and is water quenched, with Japanese army star stamp indicating approval as traditionally made blade.
All original, untouched, uncleaned. Tang untouched, excellent state of preservation.
Overall length in scabbard: 39"
Blade length from middle of habaki: 26 1/4"
(Sakihaba: 2.1cm,
Motohaba: 3 cm)
