Description
Souvenir token from the 1939 Golden Gate Exposition on Treasure Island. The Obverse legend read "Isla del Tesoro" (Treasure Island)/Pedazos de Ocho (Pieces of Eight). The bust at center resembles that used on Spanish coinage of the 19th Century, and may representAlfonso XIII, the then current (deposed) King of Spain at the time of issue. It is possible that this is a political comment on the state of European affairs in 1939, given the recent Spanish Civil War, as I do not believe that Spain had a representation at the Expo (?). It certainly relates to the "Treasure" theme of the event. 25mm in gilt brass, holed as issued. I have found these to be very scarce, with appearances few and far between.
